Our Purpose
Our work is grounded in our identities as Métis educators, artists, researchers, and lifelong learners. We are committed to sharing Métis music in ways that are respectful, engaging, accessible, and connected to the living traditions of Métis communities.
About Us
Métis Music Ed is an Indigenous-led initiative in music education founded by Métis educators Tenielle Bennett and Nicole Schutz, proud Métis women with ancestral roots in the historic homeland of Batoche, Saskatchewan. They are passionate about integrating Métis culture, history, and music into classrooms across Canada.
With extensive experience as music specialists and curriculum leaders, Tenielle and Nicole conduct workshops and create resources for Indigenizing music education. Their work emphasizes the inclusion of Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, and pedagogies in meaningful, culturally-responsive ways.
Indigenous Methodology
Using the keeoukaywin (“the visiting way”) methodology, a research model formalized by Métis scholar Dr. Janis Cindy Gaudet, research centers the Métis ways of being in connection to the land, the history, community and values and fosters miyo pimatisiwin (“the good life”).
This approach ensures that the knowledge is documented in a culturally-appropriate and respectful manner: We visit Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to record (with their permission) their stories and any songs they recall.
These recordings are carefully transcribed and made into accessible digital resources that can be shared with the Métis community, music educators, and researchers. This ensures that these songs can also be used to strengthen Métis identity and cultural continuity.
