Why This Work Matters

Music carries stories, relationships, language, memory, and identity. When Métis songs and musical traditions are shared, they create opportunities for people to connect with Métis history and culture (while recognizing that this culture is alive and always evolving).

Educators play an important role in creating spaces for Métis students to see their culture reflected and to develop respectful relationships with Métis peoples and cultural traditions.

By bringing Métis voices, music, and perspectives into classrooms and communities, we support learning that is rooted in connection, respect, and belonging.

Help Preserve Métis Songs

These songs have been carried through generations by the voices of those who came before us. Many have been passed down orally by parents, grandparents, and children… but we may lose those songs if they are no longer sung.

We at Métis Music Ed are committed to preserving Métis songs by listening, learning, documenting, and sharing. Working with community members (Elders, Knowledge Keepers, artists, educators, and Métis youth), we hope to ensure these songs can be carried forward through future generations.

It is not just the songs themselves we aim to preserve: It is also the stories, the language, and the memories that they carry.
